Effective May 10, 2007, the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA) has resumed its kosher certification of Madras Pavilion, Kirby location. Guidelines have been established to avoid a reoccurrence of the situation that resulted in suspension of certification.

Announcement: Kosher for Passover
All kosher fresh meat and poultry cut or packaged at the following stores are kosher for Passover, certified by the Houston Kashruth Associatiion, and do not require any special certification: Kroger #313, Randall's Meyer Park and Beldens.

Fresh poultry and meats in their original packaging, are kosher for Passover, and are certified by the kashruth organization which certifies them at the packing house.

Uncooked corned beef and all packaged deli meats and processed poultry (such as roasted turkey) require kosher for Passover supervision.

The kosher deli at Kroger #313 Meyer Park store will be prepared for Passover and will reopen for business on Monday or Tuesday, March 19 or 20.

The kosher deli at Randalls Meyer Park store will be prepared for Passover and will reopen for business on Monday, March 26.

Shefa Bakery and Cafe will be prepared for Passover, and will be open during Chol Hamoed. Shefa Bakery Passover products will be available at the bakery on Beechnut from the Thursday before Passover, at Randalls Meyer Park and at Kroger #313.

The following milk products for the brands listed below will be kosher for Passover for 2007:

ALERT: TCBY Yogurt
Several cities around the United States have a TCBY yogurt store, selling soft serve yogurt and other products. None of these stores were ever under the certification of the cRc, but for a period of time, the yogurt base was under the supervision of the cRc.

However, while the stores are still in operation, the manufacturer of that product is no longer in business. Some stores are using a yogurt base under various other supervisions, but none are presently certified by the cRc. It is the responsibility of the individual consumer to inspect the kosher status of this and other products before each purchase.

Houston Pecan Co. will be offering nuts and dried fruit for Passover. Bags must have an HKA - Passover sticker. Product will be available after March 28.

Coca-Cola and Diet Coke, bearing an OUP on the cap, should be available in local grocery stores, starting the week of March 26.

Kosher for Passover milk is not yet available in grocery stores. A separate bulletin will be released when it becomes available.

The chocolate cakes and cupcakes at Randall's (Meyer Park and Memorial stores) are kosher and acceptable, even if purchased March 10 through 13. They are marked with an HKA sticker.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Kosher for Passover Meat
All kosher meat at both Belden's and Kroger's is kosher for Passover, regardless of when purchased. All pre-packaged kosher meat at Randall's (Meyer Park store) is also kosher for Passover, regardless of when purchased. Meat cut and processed in the Randall's (Meyer Park) butcher shop (typically has a pink HKA tag on it) is kosher for Passover when marked with an expiration date of 3/14/06 or later.

ALERT: Randall's Bakery Chocolate Cakes
Due to a change in suppliers for Randall's bakeries (both Meyer Park and Memorial stores), chocolate layer cakes, chocolate cup cakes, chocolate round cakes and similar items where the cake (not the icing) is chocolate are not recommended. There are no HKA stickers on these items. This does not affect the kashruth of other Randall's bakery items. An update concerning the chocolate items will be sent out as soon as available. Items purchased through Thursday, March 9 with the HKA sticker are acceptable.

Fortant wine comes in both kosher and non-kosher varieties. The kosher variety has a brownish-purple label with a large OU on the front. The non- kosher variety is labeled in blue and does not have the OU.

Some of the local stores sell both varieties side by side. Consumers are cautioned to check the label, rather than just rely on the brand name.

ALERT: Kedem Grape Juice
Kedem Grape Juice comes in 3 varieties. These are:
1) Label indicates that the product is mevushal
2) Label indicates that the product is not mevushal
3) Label does not mention the mevushal status

The OU considers grape juice in the 3rd category to be mevushal, although
there are other hallachic opinions. All three varieties are present in local Houston supermarkets. They cannot be differentiated by bottle shape or size and may be mixed even on a single grocery shelf. For information on the proper use of non-mevushal products, consult your Rabbi.

All kosher raw meat sold by Belden's and Kroger's (W Bellfort & S Post Oak
location) is kosher for Passover throughout the year.

Kosher raw meat that is still in its original, sealed packaging sold by
Randall's (Meyer Park location) is kosher for Passover throughout the year.
Examples of this include the chickens in the Aaron's wrapper or brisket in its original plastic bag.

Kosher raw meat that has been cut / trimmed / ground and sold at Randall's is kosher for Passover starting with meat packaged March 18. An example of this would be ground beef or a cut steak. These packages are normally marked with the HKA logo and are signed by the mashgiach.

Alert: Empire Chickens
Chicken recalled on possible listeria

A Queens firm is recalling about 5,760 pounds of chicken products because of possible listeria contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Monday. Schreiber Processing Corp., of Maspeth, has received no reports of illness, the recall said. The products were produced on Aug. 10 and Dec. 5. The recalled products are:
  • 48-ounce boxes of Empire Kosher Fully Cooked Buffalo Style Wings, Chicken Wings Coated in Sauce, with date code 1444.
  • 28-ounce boxes of Empire Kosher Fully Cooked, Breaded, Fried Chicken, six to nine assorted pieces, with date code 0274.

Each product also bears the establishment number P-787 inside the USDA seal of inspection. They were distributed to retail stores in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Droubi's
Droubi's, 7333 Hillcroft, is now producing special limited kosher production of pita. The kosher pita has an HKA pareve sticker applied. A mashgiach is present throughout the entire production process, from the mixing through the packaging, with the mashgiach placing the stickers on the pita bags. If it does not have the sticker, it should be considered non-kosher. The kosher pita will be on sale at their store, fresh on the days on which is baked, or frozen afterwards. It may also be available in area supermarkets.

phone number is 713-283-7775. Products are frozen custard, coffee, and espresso drinks. Products are not cholov yisrael or pas yisrael.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Clarification of Kashruth at the JCC
At the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on South Braeswood, Nosher’s Snack Bar and the Café at the J are kosher and under HKA supervision. In addition, the kosher Meals on Wheels program that operates out of the JCC is also kosher and under supervision. Other food service at the JCC—S. Braeswood and other locations (Merfish, for example)—is not under supervision.

Special programs at the JCC in the future which may be under Kashruth supervision will have it specifically noted in advance and by a certificate on display at the event.

ALERT: Mission Tortillas
As previously communicated, Mission brand soft tortillas are certified as kosher pareve with a HO or DA in the date code, indicating the Houston and Dallas plants. Recently, product has started appearing in the Houston area with an SA code, indicating the San Antonio plant. This particular plant in San Antonio is not under certification and the product with the SA code should not be used.

Regarding Kroger's #313 Store (W. Bellfort at S. Post Oak):
1. The salad bar is now kosher and pareve under HKA supervision.
2. The kosher deli now has extended hours until 9 pm Sunday - Thursday.

ALERT: Kahlua Liqueur
KAHLUA LIQUEUR, bottled in Mexico, is NO LONGER KOSHER CERTIFIED. Rabbi Nissim Hilu discontinued certification as of June 15, 2004. Kahlua, bottled in Mexico, purchased before June 15, is acceptable. KAHLUA LIQUEUR, bottled in the United States, continues to be NOT CERTIFIED.

Randall's at Meyer Park is in the process of opening their Kosher Store. The bakery is back under HKA supervision. Items are now labeled individually with an HKA sticker. A butcher and deli, both also under HKA supervision, are also in the process of opening.

During its remodeling, Randall's bakery products at its Meyer Park store are not under HKA supervision and are not recommended for use. Bakery certification will be restored after its grand reopening, in approximately 3 weeks.

The product list details the pareve products prepared by Three Brothers Bakery under HKA supervision. Products not on the list should be considered dairy. We have asked Three Brothers to maintain a copy of this list at their Braeswood bakery. In addition, the HKA will issue updates as new items are produced or ingredients or preparation change.

Now and Later candy (made by Farley's Candy Company) is no longer kosher and a hechsher no longer appears on the package. Farley's is hoping to restore certification in the future but had no timeline.

Certain Mission Soft Tortillas are under Texas-K supervision, although there is no hechsher on the packaging. Packages with a “DA” or “HO” at the beginning of the expiration date code are kosher and pareve.

The Randall’s stores at Meyer Park, Dairy Ashford at Memorial, and Highway 6 at Austin Parkway have unbaked pareve fruit pies under Heart-K supervision. The pies include cherry, apple, deep dish apple, and several other flavors. Consumers must request unbaked, frozen pies from the bakery manager at these stores. (NOTE: Unbaked pumpkin pies are dairy and pecan pies are not kosher. Please be sure to check the pie box for the Heart-K hechsher before purchasing.)
